What is Environment Wales?
Environment Wales is a Welsh Assembly Government initiative which contributes to sustainable development by supporting and encouraging voluntary action for protecting and improving the Welsh environment. It is a unique partnership between the Welsh Assembly Government and 8 organisations in the voluntary sector.
Environment Wales has four objectives:
To achieve sustainable improvements to the Welsh environment through practical projects;
To increase understanding of sustainable development and the environment through information, education and advisory services;
To help create new environmental initiatives which also allow communities and voluntary organisations to contribute to their social and economic needs; and
To support and train staff and volunteers engaged in these activities.
How can Environment Wales help you?
As well as offering advice and support through our Development Officer team, Environment Wales awards five types of grants:
- Project grants can help provide project materials. These could include tools, equipment hire and volunteers' expenses.
- Management grants support the costs of project staff.
- Development grants help with the start-up costs of new groups, training of staff and volunteers and the costs of pre-project studies e.g. feasibility studies, community consultations, etc.
- Training grants support the training needs of the group. Training grants are only available to projects and groups that are registered with Environment Wales.
- Start Up grants helping to cover the costs involved with establishing new voluntary or community groups.

What we do
Gareth Davies is Keep Wales Tidy’s Development Officer for Environment Wales. The Development Officer is available to advise and support community and voluntary groups in their project work. Every Environment Wales project is allocated a monitoring Development Officer who remains a constant point of contact for the group.
Once voluntary groups from the above projects become established it is possible that they could come forward to Environment Wales for funding and advice to further develop their project or group.
