At this time of year, many of us have vowed to eat more healthily and exercise in a bid to lose excess pounds gained over the festive period but it can be difficult to maintain. Now, environmental campaigners Keep Wales Tidy are urging the people of Wales to change habits to make our environment a healthier place for 2012.
I Will for Wales asks people to make small changes to their daily routine that can make their local area a better place to live. The campaign is an easy way to look after Wales and some of its resolutions can also bring health benefits. Pledges range from walking or cycling instead of using the car for short journeys to growing some of your own fruit and vegetables.
Last year, hundreds of people from across Wales made a commitment to care for their country. From disposing of cigarette butts and chewing gum responsibly to joining a local volunteer group, many individuals and local organisations pledged to make their neighbourhoods nicer and brighter places to live.
Now, with a new year ahead, Keep Wales Tidy has created new ideas so that even more people can do their bit for Wales. The charity will be following the progress of local people doing their bit for their area and is eager for those taking part to submit diaries or blogs and photographs.
Owain Kimber from Cardiff, understands the need to do more for Wales’s environment. He says:
"This year I’m going to make an effort to visit my local allotment every week. Homegrown fruit and vegetables taste so much nicer and it’s a great way to save money. I will continue to be a responsible pet owner by picking up after my dog when we’re out walking."
Lesley Jones, Chief Executive of Keep Wales Tidy, comments:
"If more people made a few lifestyle changes and took better care of their local environment it would be a much better place to live. Some of the pledges for I Will for Wales can also benefit our health and are a great way of enjoying Wales’s great outdoors for next to nothing."
Keep Wales Tidy works with communities and schools to to improve the quality of the local environment. Its programmes aim to create a beautiful Wales that can be cared for and enjoyed by all.
