Green giant Iolo Williams recently raised the flag at an event to celebrate a school’s environmental efforts. Pupils at Hendrefoilan Primary School have achieved the Eco-Schools ‘Platinum’ award which in Wales is issued by Keep Wales Tidy.

After eight years of continuous environmental improvement, the school has gained a fourth International Green Flag, and with it, the Platinum trophy which was awarded at the school.

Over the last two years, the pupils have decided and planned many ways to improve their health, increase recycling, reduce litter and waste, save energy and water, and become better global citizens. The school grounds have become a haven for wildlife and a fun place to learn and play.

The school was assessed for its fourth International Eco-Schools Green Flag in May, by officers from Keep Wales Tidy and Swansea Healthy Schools scheme.

Keep Wales Tidy Officer, Gerry Taylor, says:

"We are really pleased to see the long-term commitment to Eco-Schools at Hendrefoilan Primary School. They have tackled many of today’s important topics including biodiversity, waste reduction and global awareness. We should take heart that these pupils will become tomorrow’s citizens who have learned to care both for their local community and also for the planet."

Programme co-ordinator, Bronwen Jones, adds:

"The children continue to strive together to make their environment better for themselves, others and wildlife – in school, at home and on a global scale. Our pupils have gained so much. Through the dedication and commitment of staff and pupils over the years, we are proud to be called a ‘Platinum Eco-School’."
